Style Icon: Emma Stone in La La Land

Image
I've always adored classic musicals, the type with big ensemble dance numbers and catchy songs, and so I've been anticipating the release of La La Land for a good few months now. Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the film promised to be a modern romance with an Old Hollywood twist, incorporating Fred & Ginger-esque dance numbers and a fabulous jazz-inspired soundtrack. I can now confirm that it didn't disappoint, having headed down to my local cinema to see it yesterday. There were so many aspects of the film I loved. I loved the songs, particularly City of Stars which has since been continually stuck in my head. I loved the dancing, especially the sequence between Stone and Gosling on the hill after they've left the party, which easily evoked old school Hollywood numbers of the past. I especially loved Ryan Gosling's performance as Seb, a struggling jazz pianist angered by the lack of popularity that his genre faces in this modern age, a part he played w

2016 Lifestyle Favourites

We're two weeks into 2017 now, and already the year seems to be going at a rapid pace. I thought it would be fun to wind the clock back to 2016 and share the things that I've loved over the past year in a post about my lifestyle favourites... Film favourites I visited the cinema quite a few times in 2016 and saw quite a few films that I really enjoyed. My favourite was probably Hail Caesar!, a Coen brothers' movie that I watched back in March. Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum, the film tells the story of Brolin's character who works as a 'fixer' for a film company in 1950s Hollywood, covering up scandalous stories about the stars. The movie didn't go down well amongst my friends but it was just the kind of thing I like, music, dance sequences, retro costumes, a cracking storyline and plenty of laughs. For me, special mention has to go to Alden Ehrenreich's performance as his comic timing really stood out, even amo

16 things I learnt in 2016

On a personal level, 2016 has been a really enjoyable year, as well as one in which I have learnt a lot. For that reason, I thought it would be fun to give you an insight into some of the things that 2016 has taught me. Here they are... 1) Growing up isn't actually that scary. 2016 was the year in which I turned 18 and although I was excited about reaching adulthood, I also felt apprehensive about starting life as a mature, responsible "grown up". Three months down the line, I actually love being 18... believe it or not, there wasn't the sudden pressure to grow up that I thought there may be, although I do feel much more mature and respected than I did at 17. In fact, becoming an adult has actually given me the best of both worlds! 2) Your problems are miniscule. In 2016 it has been hard to ignore the awful occurrences going on across the world, with media outlets and the Internet bombarding us with horrific images of the people caught up in wars and terrorist at
